Southern California natives and high school sweethearts, Tyler and Alexis have been RVing full-time for a year. After Tyler graduated with a mechanical engineering degree and Alexis received her education in dental hygiene, they got married on their 10-year anniversary. Shortly thereafter, they purchased their first home together in Canyon Lake, California, and sought to start a family. However, they experienced several unsuccessful fertility treatments. This led them to the decision to embark on a new adventure, traveling across the country while Tyler works remotely, finding joy and healing through their nomadic lifestyle. Since they began their journey, they have visited 15 states and 7 national parks. We spoke with Alexis and Tyler about how their energy system has enabled them to maximize their adventures.
Their 2019 Heartland Cyclone 3713 RV’s energy system consists of four RELiON RB300 lithium batteries, two 3,500-watt CombiMaster inverters/chargers, two MasterShunt 500 battery monitors, and three ChargeMaster 60 MPPT charge controllers. They will also be installing 3000 watts of solar panels on the roof soon. Their system powers everything they normally would if they were hooked up at a campground, such as air conditioners, washer/dryer, microwave, refrigerators, TVs and all outlets.
“Lithium batteries are the most energy-dense battery available. They also allow for the deepest discharge without harming the batteries, so they will provide power longer than other battery types. We also love that they do not require maintenance like lead acid batteries do, as well as the fact that they are lighter than other batteries, which is important in an RV.”
“What really caught our attention with RELiON batteries is the massive lineup of batteries they offer. While designing our system, we weren’t sure if we would need many smaller batteries or fewer large batteries, or if we would want to build a 12V, 36V, or 48V system. We liked that RELiON had so many options available that would suit our needs no matter which direction we decided to go with.”
“With our new system, we can boondock (camp off-grid) knowing we will always have power to the rig. Usually, the most scenic places to explore are in remote locations. This breaks us free from only exploring areas with campgrounds nearby, and we can see everything this country has to offer while always having power!”
“Lithium batteries are hands down the best battery you can use in an RV or marine applications. They are extremely reliable and will provide consistent power for years!”
“We love adventuring and visiting new places! We also love our hometown, but we were getting tired of the same daily routine. That’s not the case with RV life. We get to pack up our home and go to a new destination, a new state, weekly or biweekly. The best part is that we make the decision! We also love the flexibility and excitement of it. Our route has changed numerous times because we liked a location and wanted to stay longer or we were experiencing bad weather and had to get out. Every day is something new! Besides getting to explore, we have also met so many incredible people on this journey.”
“Utah was incredible! We had never seen anything like it before, and the nature was breathtaking. Arches National Park had our jaws on the floor and we couldn’t get enough of it. But, we also love the mountains. Exploring the Great Smoky Mountains National Park has been one of our favorites. We don’t get much greenery in Southern California and the trees in this park were amazing!”
“If you’re thinking about whether you should do it, and have the capability to do so, then do it! It’s a decision that we have thanked ourselves for making every day - for jumping in and being brave enough to do something out of the norm. There are things we miss about home, but home will always be there. We will never be this young again, so why not take the chance and do it now.”
